What is an enduro MTB?

Enduro mountain bikes are all-rounders that inspire both uphill and downhill and have therefore become perhaps the most popular category among mountain bikes in recent years. They are positioned between freeride bikes and trail bikes and therefore offer sufficient suspension travel (around 150-170 mm) for difficult terrain, drops and jumps, but not too much so that you can also pedal efficiently on climbs. The manufacturers attach particular importance to a suitable combination of frame geometry, weight and high-quality suspension.

What are the advantages of an enduro MTB?

The advantages of an enduro MTB are above all: versatility and robustness. Whether on tours, in bike parks or in enduro races - an enduro mountain bike leaves all options open to you. These are not the only advantages:

  • Comfort: the suspension travel and frame geometry increase comfort on long tours and rough trails.
  • Adaptability: Can be adapted to many conditions with different tyres and suspension settings.
  • Robust construction: Enduro bikes are built to last, which means tough trails, jumps and drops are no problem for them.

MTB Enduro - Who are Enduro bikes suitable for?

Enduro racers, touring fans, bike park enthusiasts or single trail fans - an enduro bike appeals to everyone who longs for a sporty and versatile bike. The enduro segment offers a wide range of models with different wheel sizes, suspension systems, brakes and shifting components, so there is something for every taste and requirement.

The aggressive geometry of an enduro bike automatically positions the rider in a sporty position, which not only enables fast uphill passages, but also leads to an even faster and more exciting riding experience, especially on descents!

A look at the components - What is important for an enduro MTB?

Frame material

Carbon vs aluminium:

Carbon

  • Lightweight: Carbon frames are generally lighter than aluminium.
  • Stiffness: Offers greater stiffness for the same weight, which leads to more efficient power transmission.
  • Price: Carbon is more expensive to purchase than aluminium.

Aluminium

  • Cost: Aluminium frames are cheaper than carbon.
  • Repairability: Easier and cheaper to repair compared to carbon.
  • Weight: Aluminium frames are heavier than carbon, which can increase the overall weight of the bike.

Suspension

The suspension of your enduro bike is the key to a good riding experience on trails. Look out for :

  • High-quality brands such as Rockshox, Fox or Öhlins
  • Air suspension or coil
  • Adjustment options: Air pressure, rebound, lockout

Air suspensions are most commonly found on enduro bikes - the advantage: they can be precisely adjusted to suit your weight and how you want to ride. However, if you are looking for a more gravity-heavy alternative and want an even more sensitive response, then a coil, i.e. a steel spring shock absorber, could be just the thing for you.

Tyres & wheel size

Wide tyres with an aggressive tread ensure grip and safety on all surfaces. There are different types, sizes and materials of tyres, and different tyre models are available depending on the intended use. Well-known brands include: Maxxis, Schwalbe, Continental and Michelin.

Wheel sizes

27.5 inch

  • Enables fast and agile handling in technical sections and in the air.
  • Easier to accelerate, giving you an advantage at the start, especially in enduro races.
  • Less rollover behaviour, which makes overcoming obstacles more difficult than with 29 inch wheels.

29 inch

  • Rolls more easily over higher rocks and roots and offers more stability.
  • Maintains speed better on open roads.
  • Less manoeuvrable in tight corners and technical passages.

Mullet (27.5 inch rear / 29 inch front)

  • Combines the manoeuvrability of a 27.5-inch rear wheel with the rollover behaviour of a 29-inch front wheel.
  • Offers a good balance between agility and stability.
  • Slightly less balanced than wheels of the same size.

Brakes

Powerful disc brakes are essential for safety and control at high speeds and on steep descents. Look out for well-known manufacturers such as SRAM, Shimano or Magura.

Weight

Although a lower weight is often advantageous, Enduro bikes strive for an optimum compromise between weight, stability and performance. The lighter models are around 13-15.5 kg, heavier ones are around 15.5-17 kg.

Geometry of enduro bikes

The geometry of an enduro bike is very important because it helps you to keep the bike under control even at high speeds, pedal more efficiently, ride comfortably for longer and adapt it perfectly to your riding style and size.

Enduro MTB - Schaubild mit Geometrie

Reach (1)

Reach is a new but very important measurement that shows you how you stand on the bike. It measures the distance between the bottom bracket and the head tube and gives you an idea of where your upper body is when standing. Enduro bikes often have a slightly longer reach to give you better control when descending. Depending on the model, you will have to decide whether you want a more manoeuvrable or smoother bike.

Seat angle (2)

On enduro bikes, this is rather steep, typically between 75 and 78 degrees, which improves pedalling efficiency and allows for aggressive positioning. In comparison, CC bikes have a rather slack seat angle, which can be helpful on long uphills.

Chainstay (3)

The length of the chainstay is decisive for the smoothness or manoeuvrability of your bike. It describes the distance between the bottom bracket and the rear wheel axle. A shorter chainstay makes the bike more manoeuvrable and playful, while a longer one ensures smooth running at high speeds. The length of the chainstay is often adapted to certain wheel sizes in order to find the optimum balance.

Stack (4)

Stack describes how high the top of the head tube is, measured from the bottom bracket to the end of the head tube. Enduro bikes tend to have a higher stack than cross-country (CC) bikes, which gives you more control downhill. CC bikes have a lower stack to prevent the front wheel from lifting off the ground on uphills.

Steering angle (5)

The steering angle has an influence on how the bike feels when steering. It is mainly important for experienced riders who prioritise performance and is less important for the general fit. CC bikes have a steeper steering angle, which makes it easier to steer uphill. An enduro bike tends to have a slacker steering angle of around 64-65 degrees, which makes it slightly more cumbersome in tight obstacles, but more stable at high speeds and provides safety.

Seat tube length (6)

The length of the seat tube determines how well you can sit on the bike and pedal efficiently. If the seat tube is too long, you won't reach the ground properly. If it's too short, you won't be able to pedal effectively. The right seat tube length is therefore crucial for comfort and performance. We have taken this into account in the size recommendations, which you can find directly above the shopping basket for each bike, so that you can see the frame size that is right for you.

What else should you look out for when buying an enduro mountain bike?

When choosing your next enduro MTB, you should make sure that the components (see above) really suit the trails you ride the most. Even more important is choosing the right frame size so that you can ride comfortably and have full control of your bike. Don't worry about finding the right size - on each of our bikes you will find a button directly above the shopping basket: "Find the right frame size". The recommendations you'll find there will take you straight to your ideal bike size.
