Buy mountain bikes at STATERA Bikes | Your expert for MTBs

Mountain biking originated in the late 1970s when a group of bike enthusiasts, driven by adrenaline and a desire for adventure, began modifying their bikes for off-road trails. This group of early mountain bikers laid the foundations for a sport that is now much more than just a hobby. MTB combines the longing for freedom with state-of-the-art technology and specialised equipment to push the limits on spectacular trails and in breathtaking landscapes. What once began as a daring leisure activity has developed into a recognised sport and a very popular pastime that fascinates riders all over the world.

Types and uses of mountain bikes: find out what suits you!

Hardtail or fully?

There are different types of mountain bike depending on your intended use:

  • Cross Country (CC): These bikes are designed for speed and efficiency on less technical trails. They usually have less suspension travel (100-120mm), with hardtails often being favoured here.
  • Trail: A versatile category suitable for both climbs and descents. These bikes usually have a suspension travel of between 120 and 150mm. Fullys are often preferred here.
  • Enduro: Developed for more demanding trails with greater differences in altitude. From the Enduro category upwards, only full-suspension mountain bikes are offered. They offer a suspension travel of 150mm-180mm.
  • Downhill (DH): These bikes are designed for the most challenging descents and have the most suspension travel (180mm+), but are hardly suitable for climbs.

Advantages of mountain bikes

Mountain bikes are known for their robustness and versatility. They offer the freedom to explore almost any terrain - from gentle forest paths to steep trails. The wider tyres offer more grip and stability, while the suspension absorbs shocks, resulting in a more comfortable riding experience.

What you need to consider before buying an MTB:

Intended use:

Decide whether you need a hardtail or a fully and what suspension travel you prefer based on the terrain you want to ride and your personal riding ability.

Frame size and material:

For the right size, a personal consultation in our shop is ideal; online, our size recommendation table above the "Add to basket" button will help you. The most popular frame materials are carbon and aluminium, each with their own advantages and disadvantages, depending on the type and purpose of your MTB .

In principle, you can say:

Carbon: High stiffness with low weight, efficient power transfer and easy handling

Aluminium: Cost-effective, high strength and durability

Gear changes on an MTB:

Mountain bikes usually use derailleur gears for their extensive gear range and precise shifting. A combination of a front chainring and an 11- or 12-sprocket cassette, optimised for demanding climbs and fast descents, is typical. Single cranks dominate in competition due to their weight advantage and lower wear, while two- and three-speed systems offer a wide range of applications. Hub gears or integrated gears are less common, as derailleur gears lead in terms of adaptability and efficiency.

Specialised MTBs for women

Many manufacturers offer mountain bikes specially designed for women, which are adapted to the ergonomics and body geometry of women. These bikes often offer shorter top tube lengths, special saddles and sometimes customised suspension.
